Section 5 returns the action to 1884, where Ike enters the now-leased and invaded woods, meets and salutes a totemic snake, and finds Boon hammering his gun under a gum tree full of squirrels. Here, memories of sublime apprehension in the hunt are accommodated to an ironic realization that things are not as they were.

Important in Go Down, Moses and Intruder in the Dust, the Beauchamps also appear in A Fable, The Town, and The Reivers. In Intruder in the Dust, Lucas Beauchamp, framed for the murder of a white man, coordinates from his jail cell the efforts of Chick Mallison, a white youth whom Lucas has earlier aided, to open the grave of the murder victim and thus begin Lucas’s exoneration. In Go Down, Moses, Ike McCaslin, after learning his family’s genealogy (in ‘‘The Bear’’), repudiates his inheritance and makes some restitution to his Beauchamp relatives.
