Although bonobos and chimpanzees are closely related, their social systems are quite different. Chimpanzee females are reproductively receptive less than five percent of their adult lifetime, while for female bonobos it is close to 50 percent (de Waal, 1997). The menstrual cycle of a chimpanzee is about 35 days, while that of a bonobo is 45 days, during which the period of their genital swelling lasts much longer. In addition, unlike chimpanzees, bonobos resume sexual swelling within a year of giving birth, when they are sexually active but not fertile.

Gibbons are difficult to observe in the wild because they are small (about 5 or 6 kg, 11 to 13 lb), high above the ground, and very agile, swinging from branch to branch by virtue of their extremely long arms and mobile shoulder joints. Even if you can see them, you cannot see many of their interactions. We do know that pairs are often near each other, jointly defend their territory, and practice mutual grooming. However, in one study lar gibbon males spent more time grooming young gibbons than they did grooming adult females (Bartlett, 2009), and partner changes were so frequent that monogamous pairings were serial at best.

There seemed to be good reason for this: for nine of these females this happened after a failed attempt at breeding, and in four other cases the pairs did not breed at all. In only two cases did geese change partners after having successfully raised young. Bernd Heinrich (2004) describes the vicissitudes of partner change as it affected Pop, Peep, and acquaintances, Canada geese (Branta canadensis) who nested on a bog in Vermont where he kept close watch over them for several years. Peep was hatched in 1998 from an egg of a wild Canada goose put under a domestic goose to incubate.
